Feeling overwhelmed by skincare? Start here. Cleanse, moisturize, protect and that's it.

If you're new to skincare, it's easy to feel overwhelmed.

Serums, toners, essences, masks... it's a lot. Honestly, it's enough to make you want to just wash your face with water and call it a day.

But here's the truth:

You don't need 10 products. You need 3.

A simple routine you actually stick with beats a cabinet full of random stuff you never use.

Let me break it down for you.

Step 1: Cleanse
Why it matters.

Throughout the day, your skin collects dirt, oil, makeup, and pollution. If you don't wash it off, it sits on your skin, clogging pores and causing breakouts.

What to look for

Gentle, non-stripping cleanser. If your skin feels tight or squeaky after washing, it's too harsh Cream or gel formulas – Both work, just pick what feels comfortable No harsh sulfates, they strip your natural oils

How to do it

Wash your face twice a day, morning and night. Use lukewarm water (hot water dries out skin). Gently massage for about 60 seconds, then rinse.

Step 2: Moisturize
Why it matters.

Moisturizer locks in hydration and protects your skin barrier. Even oily skin needs this step (remember Myth #3 from my first post?).

What to look for
  • For oily skin

Lightweight gel or water based formulas with hyaluronic acid

  • For dry skin

Richer creams with ceramides or shea butter

  • For combination skin

Medium-weight lotions that absorb quickly

How to do it

Apply to damp skin right after cleansing. This seals in extra hydration. Use about a pea-sized amount for your face.

Step 3: Protect (Sunscreen)
Why it matters

This is the most important step. Sun damage causes 80-90% of visible aging wrinkles, dark spots, and loss of firmness. Nothing else matters if you're not protecting your skin daily.

What to look for

SPF 30 or higher Broad spectrum (protects against both UVA and UVB rays) One you'll actually wear, texture matters. If it feels gross, you won't use it

How to do it

Apply as the last step of your morning routine. Use enough (about 1/4 teaspoon for face). Don't forget your neck, ears, and the back of your hands.

What About Serums, Toners, and Exfoliants?

Those come after you've mastered the basics. Once your skin is comfortable with the 3-step routine, you can add extras based on your goals:

Serums for specific concerns (acne, aging, dark spots)

Exfoliants for smoother texture (1-2 times a week)

Toners for extra hydration or balancing

But start with the foundation. A simple routine you do every day beats a complicated one you skip.

The Bottom Line

Consistency beats complexity.

You don't need a 10-step routine to have great skin. Cleanse, moisturize, protect. Do it every day. That's the secret.
